Cannot remotely login to SQL Express since last windows update

Since today (after installing the latest Windows Updates !on my local machine!) I cannot login to a SQLExpress instance remotely; stating that it cannot find the server/instance.

The weird thing is: it only happens when I want to login to the non-default instance (sqlexpress 2005) (<IP>\<instance>).

When i'm using the default instance (msde 2000 or sqlexpress 2005 on another machine) (<IP>) it seems to work fine.

Does this have something to do with the windows updates, or is it just a coincedence?

Remco RosThis is probably due to the update changed your setting. Just check your firewall on the server and put sqlbrowser.exe or UDP port 1434 to exception. Also make sure your sqlbrowser is running.|||we didn't install the updates on the server (yet) only on the client, so it must be a client thing.

Server:
Win 2003 / SQL Express 2005
Tcp/ip / named pipes: yes
sqlbrowser running
firewall exception on 1434udp 1433tcp.

tested on these client(s):
Local (without latest updates): CAN connect
XP Home with SQL Server Management studio (with lates windows updates): CANNOT connect
XP Pro with SQL Server Management studio Express (with lates windows updates): CANNOT connect
Win 2003 with SQL Server Management studio Express

(WITHOUT lates windows updates): CAN connect.

I see a pattern here...|||Are you sure your SQL Express listens on TCP port 1433 since your put 1433 in exception? What's the result if you run "telnet yourserver sql_tcp_port"? Can it connect? Could it be possible that IPSEC blocked the traffic between the problem machine if the IPSEC is on?

Cannot reinstall MSDE on XP after uninstall it

I have trouble reinstalling MSDE 2000 on a XP machine after uninstalled it. I
did apply SP3a to the previous install of MSDE 2000 on the same XP machine.
Some of the component in an application did not work well so I had to
uninstall the MSDE 2000 SP3a completely. I removed all folders and even
registry entries. I kept getting this message, "Setup failed to configure the
server. Refer to the server error logs and setup logs for more information".
Unfortunately, those error and setup logs were useless. So, I used the /L*v
parameter to generate the setup log but it did not pinpoint why it failed. It
always fail at the last 4 seconds install period.
I ran the same setup on another XP machine. After uninstalled MSDE, removed
folders and registry entries, I was able to reinstall MSDE 2000 again.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

in the article. None of them exists. So, I installed Windows Support Tools
for XP on the machine, ran the msizap with GUID, it found nothing.
The setup still fails with the same error message. What's next?

you can try reinstalling the used MDAC stack and, in case of WinXP sp2, fix

A had the same problem. I found that there isn't uninstalled
MSSQLServerADHelper service. I searched in registry and deletet
(almost;-) everything which contained MSSQL. That works (at least at my
PC). Maybe it'll work at yours too.

|||Okay...Finally, I got it to reinstall after many tries. Thank you all for
your helps. First, MDAC was messed up. It was sqlsrv32.dll. Because I
upgraded my initial MSDE installed to SP3a, that DLL file got upgraded. I
replaced that DLL file from a good known XP machine. Then, re-registered all
MDAC using MDAC Repair Util. That didn't work. Later, I found out that there
were three DLLs missing from the System32 folder: sqlsrv32.rll, SQLWID.DLL &
SQLWOA.DLL. I copied them from a known good XP machine. Reinstalled MDAC 2.8
completely. After that, it installed just fine...Thank you.

Cannot Register the server

I've installed an Instance of MSDE on a Win2k Machine and and WinXP Machine.
I'm able to register the Instances locally through EM (v.8.0), but when I
try to register them from a different PC with EM on it, I get the following
error.
SQL Server does not exist or access is denied. ConnectionOpen (Connect()
Is MSDE limited to local Enterprise Management?

please verify the network protocols are enabled via Server Network Utility
(svrnetcn.exe)...
MSDE installs by default disabling network protocols in order to prevent
external connections/attacks... you have to provide the
DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0
parameter at install time in order to force network protocols to be enable,
or, later afte install, use svrnetcn.exe to enable and configure the desired
protocol

Cannot Register Sql Server Database

We have SQL Server installed on a Windows 2000 server machine. I have a cop
y of Sql Server Personal Addition - Client tools on my computer. When I ope
n the SQL Server Enterprise manager and try perform an New SQL Server Regist
ration, I get the following
error: Login Failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a truste
d SQL Server Connection. I am using windows authentication.
I am able to connect to other sql server databases on other servers.
I also cannot connect to the server via ODBC. I get the error: Unable to lo
cate database server. Verify that the database server name you entered is c
orrect.
I am running microsoft XP / Microsoft SQL Server 2000 service pack 3a is on

Are you using Domain user id to login to your machine, if yes then check the
SQL server that you have given access to sql server.
How to check.
In Enterprise Manager, Security option, Check wheather ur login is there
with reqired previlages.

h has install both SQL2000 and SQL2005. I can use my local Management Studio
to register the SERVER\SQL2000 instance but I cannot register SERVER\SQL200
5 instance.
How can I register and connect to the SERVER\SQL2005 server?
The SERVER\SQL2005 has been configured to enable the protocols of shared mem
ory, namepipe and tcpip already.
The SERVER has installed SQL2000 first and then install SQL2005 server.

Are both SQL2000 and SQL2005 installed as named instances on the server?
It could be that SQL2000 is installed as a default instance (hence you
can connect to it just with the servername) and SQL2005 is installed as
a named instance so you need to use that instance name to connect.

The SQL2000 is the default instance and SQL2005 is a named instance. When I
register the SQL2005 on my workstation's Management Studio, I've already use
d the name instance to try connect but it failed.
I've already set the remote connection with namepipe and tcpip in the servic
e area configuration on the server. When I try to use ODBC on my workstation
to connect to the SERVER\SQL2005, I can successfully establish the connecti
on. I just cannot register the SERVER\SQL2005 on my workstation's management
studio.

Are both SQL2000 and SQL2005 installed as named instances on the server? It
could be that SQL2000 is installed as a default instance (hence you can conn
ect to it just with the servername) and SQL2005 is installed as a named inst
ance so you need to use that instance name to connect.

protocols. What does the SQLServer 2005 Configuration Manager tool say (i.e.
not SAC!). Also make sure that you can resolve the server name correctly.
You may also want to look at SQLPing to to see to search for servers

I finally figure out what causing the connection issue, it's the firewall se
ttings. I use a Windows XP with SP2 as a server and the firewall has turned
on. It only allow SQL connection from port 1433 and that's the reason why I
cannot connect with SQL Management Studio with port 1025 (SQL2005). When I s
hut down the firewall, it works.

I am running SQL 7 and trying to connect to a SQL2000

I have not been using my SQL server 2000 for a while on this particular
machine. I had my account disabled and just got it re-enabled at work.
Login name is the same and password has changed as it does every 30 days. I
am trying to get into my server but keep getting the following error
message:
"SQL Server registration Failed because of the connection failure displayed
below. Do you wish to Register anyway?"
"Cannot open user default database. Login Failed"
I am at a loss and if anyone could suggest something to me other than
un-installing the instance and re-installing it, I would be appreciative.

I'm working in VS 2005 with a starter kit. I close VS and open an MDF file in SQL Server 2005 Management Studio to modify a table. I attach the file, change a data type, then detach the file. When I go back to VS and try to run the program, I get this error. Everything runs normally before I bring the file into Management Studio. It is not a permissions issue. Does SQL Server put some kind of lock on the file? This must be a fairly common problem. A developer will sometimes want to modify an .mdf file. How does he do that and then run his program? Thank you for any suggestions I can try.

What authentication is this instance. Post your connection string... this seems to be the problem with ASPNET user. The "ASPNET" user account is created in Windows XP by Microsoft .NET Framework. In the connection string you use a SQL Server Login and try.

Applications that use integrated authentication and impersonation are also not generally affected. However, if an application is not impersonating and is using Integrated Authentication, you must grant access to the database for the ASPNET account.

You cannot use the ASPNET account when you try to authenticate to Microsoft SQL Server by using Integrated Authentication over named pipes. However, you can use the ASPNET account together with Integrated Authentication over the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) transport.

Seen that before.

Someone has modified your login or the default database is unavailable.

You can use the following command to log on using Query Analyser. Run it the in the RUN window.

Code Snippet

isqlw -S servername -E (-U username -P password if using sql login) -d master

This will log you on to master database and then you can check for any problems or reset the default database using sp_defaultdb.

Been looking through the forums for a solution to this problem.
I already tried granting access through statements such as:
exec sp_grantloginaccess N1'machineName\ASPNET'
But they don't seem to work.. i vaguely remember seeing somewhere a DOS command line statement that grants access to the ASPNET_WP and that fixed my problem before on another computer.. but this is a new computer and i forgot to write down the command.
Can anyone help explain and propose a solution to my problem. Many thanxs.

|||You need to grant login permissions to the ASPNET account as well asdatabase permissions. Do you have Enterprise Manager? Thiswould help you to set permissions using a GUI tool. Assuming youdo not, then you could use the osql commandline utility. I amalso further assuming this is a local instance of SQL Server.
Usingosql, from the command prompt, this will connect you to your instanceof SQL Server and put you into an interactive mode with osql:

osql -E -S (local)

Now you can enter the commands in the interactive mode:

I went with tmorton's instructions because it looked easier and more straightforward. I enabled me to get my app running after a few minor adjustments. I described what I did below but don't fully understand why it worked. Could you please help clarify?
I was able to grantlogin to 'machineName\ASPNET', however, got an error stating that permissions already existed for 'machineName\ASPNET' when I tried to grantdbaccess. I do have EnterpriseManager and went into the Users of the database I needed to use. I deleted the 'machineName\ASPNET' from that list. Then ran the sp_grantdbaccess 'machineName\ASPNET' again. This time succeeding. Thus my application has permissions to run. But when I went back ino the database/users, I didn't see 'machineName\ASPNET' in the User list. Why is that?
Where can I look to see the results of executing the sp_grantlogin & sp_grantdbaccess? Shouldn't there be a list for that somewhere?
And just to make sure that I understand what is happening. The sp_grantlogin simply gives the user 'machineName\ASPNET' permission to login into the SQLServer (1st level). Then sp_grantdbacess gives the user 'machineName\ASPNET' permission to access the specified database (from the use yourDatabase)

Enterprise Manager is not good about refreshing data. Eitherclose Enterprise Manager completely and reopen it, or start at yourserver right-clicking and choosing Refresh on each node all of the waydown until you get to the node for the data you are concernedwith.

Cannot open database during merge replication

Hi All,
I am replicating an SQL2005 express machine to SQL2005 standard edition server using merge replication.

I have a simple VB application using ADO polling msMerge_history at the subscriber every second so that i can show the end user the progress of the replication.

When the subscription first subscribes and after the initial snapshot is applied replication downloads all changes from the server that have been changed since the snapshot was created.

Towards the end of this download faze the VB polling application fails with "Cannot open database "DBName" requested by the login. The login failed."

This connection fails 4 or 5 times and then normal polling resumes. The scary thing is that sometimes when the polling connection fails the merge replication does not complete and if i check msMerge_Sessions the "runstatus" is stuck at 3 (InProgress).

1) Is the reason the ADO polling connection fails because of some sort of lock between replication and reading the system tables?
2) Is replication getting stuck because of locks?
3) What can i do to get around this?

When you say log in to web app do you mean a sql server database? First I would make sure remote connections to sql are enabledhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277. Next, Is possible that port 1433 (default sql port) is blocked somewhere between your machine and the server? I would run a port scanner from your local machine and see if it is listening

Yes, I am using the default ASPNETDB membership/authentication database on SQL 2005 Workgroup edn. Here's some further info that I just discovered:

I can log into the web app fine from home, but not from the local domain. I suspected domains had something to do with it. We just got a new server with SBS 2003 (for reasons of economy). However, SBS assigned the server to be the domain controller of the domain: "MyCompanyName.local".

The old web server was not part of a domain. I don't really want to remove the server from the "local" domain, since the server uses this (I think!) for Exchange and Active Directory. I wouldn't even know how to do this in any case.

Anyway, back to your post:

It is very unlikely that the sql port is blocked, since SQL Server is on the same machine as the web app. This was also working fine on the old server, which was running 2003 Ent. Edn. It seems that the only difference between the two servers is the domain. Oh, there is also no error showing up in the web app - the password box just goes blank when I hit return.

I have had numerous problems installing SQL Server 2005 on various machine. Most of those problems are related to insufficient rights to various users. But I am baffled by this one:

Setup Failed: Could not load SQLSpars.dll

Why would this happen? I see this message after beginning the SQL Server 2005 Standard setup and making my installation selections and beginning the install. The process stops after about 30 seconds, and displays the above message.

My machine is running Windows XP SP2.

Any ideas?

A few customers have reported this issue but we haven't tracked down the bug or a workaround yet. If you can post a link to your Setup log files, I'll try to convince a developer to look at them and offer advice.

|||SQL Server Setup log files are located at %Program Files%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG|||

There are at least 4 log-related files in the Files folder. This is from my file called:
SQLSetup0008_DSLPTP05_Core(Local).log
I copied and pasted the top of the file to the point at which it logged the failure.

Does this help (it sure didn't help me when I looked at it)?

I'm sorry but this issue was NEVER resolved. Would you believe that I had paid $99 to open an incident with Microsoft? After spending about three weeks with them, sending megabytes of log files, etc., they gave up and said that they could only recommend that I re-baseline my Windows XP Pro SP2 installation in order to install Sql Server 2005.

It is a sad day when the author of the software can't get it to install on a state-of-the-art hardware platform and latest software service packs and mainstream operating system.

If I could use Oracle, I would, but sadly I have to use Sql Server 2005. I am going to see if Microsoft today has any additional information on this issue because I am still not running on my main development machine. I had to install a database instance on another machine on my network and use TCP/IP to access the database instance on it.

I was able to get the Community Technology Preview installation of Sql Server 2005 installed on my development machine, however. This at least gives me the ability to access a Sql Server 2005 database from my development machine. But I still cannot get the native client installed on that machine.

The root cause of the problem (in my case) was that DTC wasn't installed on the server. Try as I might I couldn't get it installed either (the reason escapes me right now) so I just scrapped the whole OS (which I think was Win2k3) and installed (using the same installer package) on Win XP. Worked like a dream. It was only on VPCs anyway so I didn't lose too much.

If you want to know if DTC is installed or not go to a command window and type "msdtc". If it returns without barfing at you then you know its installed.

DTC is installed and is running successfully on the computer in question. So, on my WinXPSP2 system, DTC is not the issue...

I have had numerous problems installing SQL Server 2005 on various machine. Most of those problems are related to insufficient rights to various users. But I am baffled by this one:

Setup Failed: Could not load SQLSpars.dll

Why would this happen? I see this message after beginning the SQL Server 2005 Standard setup and making my installation selections and beginning the install. The process stops after about 30 seconds, and displays the above message.

My machine is running Windows XP SP2.

Any ideas?

A few customers have reported this issue but we haven't tracked down the bug or a workaround yet. If you can post a link to your Setup log files, I'll try to convince a developer to look at them and offer advice.

There are at least 4 log-related files in the Files folder. This is from my file called:
SQLSetup0008_DSLPTP05_Core(Local).log
I copied and pasted the top of the file to the point at which it logged the failure.

Does this help (it sure didn't help me when I looked at it)?

I'm sorry but this issue was NEVER resolved. Would you believe that I had paid $99 to open an incident with Microsoft? After spending about three weeks with them, sending megabytes of log files, etc., they gave up and said that they could only recommend that I re-baseline my Windows XP Pro SP2 installation in order to install Sql Server 2005.

I was so disgusted that I asked for a refund of the $99 (which they provided without hesitation).

Cannot integrate SQL Server 2005 with Visual Studio 2005

Hi,

I have a question that I hope someone can help me with.

I' have installed VS2005 Beta 2 on my XP machine. I've also installed SQL Server 2005 and uninstalled SQL Express (though the instance still seems to appear even though it no longer works!)

So basically I'm trying to get VS2005 to work with SQL Server 2005. However when I go into solution explorer, I :-

It sounds like you've got some registry badness going on. De-install all SQL Server, following this link:
