Cannot REinstall SQL2000 SP3 After Install MSAS

My development machine has win 2000 SP4, SQL server dev 2000 with SP3
and vs2003 etc. I installed Analysis services on my dev machine but
MSAS does not work (try to browse FoodMart2000 any cube gives error
"Unable to browse the cube 'Budget' Unspecified Error" ). Found an
article said to fix MSAS by reinstalling SQL2000 SP3. On another
machine, I re-installed Sp3 after MSAS then MSAS worked. Here is the
error from my Dev machine SP3 reinstall. I uninstalled MSAS,
reinstalled MSAS then tried SQL2000SP3 but still get the same error.
Any IDeas?

now exit.

Cannot register notification services

Hi everyone,

It's going to drive me crazy. I don't know why I cannot register my notification service. I have got this error:

"The performance counter category could not be installed. Category Name: NS$CustomerInterfaceInstance:Vacuumer"

Additionnal information: "Cannot create Performance Category 'NS$CustomerInterfaceInstance:Vacuumer' because it already exists. (System)"

I tried to delete the notification, close SQL ServerManagement Studio, but I always have the same error.

I installed two times these same notifications in other computers and never seen that before. I tried to change the name of my instance because it seems that it doesn't delete something but I've got the same error with my former instance name NS$CustomerInterfaceInstance.

I don't understand anything, it's crazy!

Please help me, if you had the same problem or if you know how to fix it.

Hi Aurelie -

To get back to where you want to be, that is to be able to create the instance, try unregistering the instance (even though it may not completely exist). You may have to use the NSCommandPrompt to do this if it doesn't appear in Management Studio.

Then delete the instance. As counter-intuitive as it may sound, it's possible to delete an instance (which occurs only within SQL Server) without unregistering it. If you do so, that leaves the registry entries, performance counters, and even the instance service in tact, and you cannot re-register an instance of the same name.

After deleting the instance, you can verify that the instance is truly removed by looking in the msdb system database in the NS90.NSInstanceInfo table. For more information about that, check here:

After this, you should be able to create your instance again.

I am facing the above mentioned error quite frequently. I am using SQL 2005 reporting services and my database is in SQL 2005. I am using a stored procedure and pass the parameters to the SP through the report. The SP returns the results in about 4-5 seconds at max but when the report is run, it usually takes a long time for processing and then it throws the following error:

Cannot read the next data row for the data set ABC. A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.

Can anyone from Microsoft please specify the exact reason for this error and how can we solve it?

Also there is another problem, some of my reports use SPs. When the SPs are run independantly, they return the results efficiently in about 2-3 seconds but when the report is run using the same SPs, the report returns the results in 2-3 minutes. Any reasons? Any configuration change that may be required for reporting server?

An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted)

Cannot read the next data row for the data set MainDataSource. (rsErrorReadingNextDataRow)

Transaction (Process ID 62) was deadlocked on lock resources with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction.|||

You might try to add a NOLOCK hint to your joins.

Or you can 'set transaction isolation level read uncommitted' for procs where you don't want to issue read locks.

That might help.

The problem is intermittant and we dont exactly know when and why does this occur. sometimes the report runs fine and at other times, it generates this problem. I hope to get an answer from Microsoft as this is starting to create problems for us as the number of report users increase, the error is occurring more frequently.

I've also noticed that this error frequency rises with the number of users using the database (but that should be obvious).

Cannot preview/deploy error

When I try to preview a report developed an on XP Pro box with Reporting
Services evaluation installed (Visual Studio 2003), I get a blank screen with
no preview. My SQL statement appears to be fine, because I get no errors
when I execute it on the Data tab, and see the data that should be reported
on.
When I try to deploy the report from within Visual Studio, I get an error
message telling me that "The type initializer for
'Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.CatalogItemUrlBuilder' threw an
exception", and nothing gets deployed. Is there any way to get details on
this exception thrown, or a known way to prevent this?
If I upload the .rdl file into the http://localhost/Reports report manager
site manually, the report generates and displays without any kind of errors.Several people have reported this error, but we have never identified the
source. Can you try debugging the Report Designer process? (Attach another
instance of Visual Studio as a debugger, enable catching exceptions and view
the call stack.) Send me a dump of the call stack.

problems with deploying the reports and previewing reports went away. I've

Cannot pass params (data type system.guid) to subreport?

Hello experts,

I am trying to create a report including a subreport in VS.2003 Reporting services. The subreport itself runs properly, if I give it a parameter, but when I try to run the main (parent) report, I get the obvious message Subreport could not be shown.

The output windows returns a message:

The value expression used in textbox ‘AccountID’ returned a data type that is not valid.

The AccountID field is a system.guid. I tried to "cast" it as a text, but I got another error message that the system.guid cannot be explicitly converted.

Does anyone know how to get around this?

The .NET GUID structure has ToString() method to get the guid converted to string. On the other side, you can use the GUID(string) constructor to convert it back to guid.sql

Cannot open http://localhost/reports

Hi Folks,

I've just installed SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition with Reporting Services.

Via Visual Studio, I am able to create and run reports without an issue, but I am unable to launch the web element of Reporting Services, via http://localhost/reports

I get the message "Page cannot be found".

I have run the install a second time in the hope of a "repair" but it has made no difference.

FYI, from within IIS, I cannot see reference to a website for "reports".

Any ideas?

If there is not reference for Report or ReportServer, then you probably did not install the Reporting Server. make sure that the prerequisites are fullfilled before installing the server.

Try launching the RS 2005 Configuration tool from Start->All Programs->Microsoft SQL Server 2005->Configuration Tools->Reporting Services Configuration. cannot open a jscript file

SQL Server CTP Sept 2005.

In Microsoft Visual Studio 8 after starting an Integration Services Project I tried to create a jscript file. A file was created but the browser was completely messed up.

First I was never able to open it (right after it was created but not yet saved). The file name "jscript1.js" would appear as a separate tab on top of the window next to the "start page" but when you click on it the the file does not appear in the editor window as I assume it should. Instead the same object browset or start page would stay under the tab name "jscript.js file." Sometimes strange vertical stipes appear next to the tool box or instead of it. Quite weird, obviously a bug in the designer. A MS error report was automatically generated at one point and sent to MS but it took almost 20 min to do despite a broadband connection.

After I tried to save the file the browser seemed to freeze but I could eventually shut it down. I found the file in the proper directory but there is no way to open it in the VS Browser now (I opened it in the notebook). The Windows dialog box simply freezes when the file is clicked on.

I am still experimenting. Finally I was able to open it when I changed the sequence of operations. First, I opened the file, then ADDed the project to it. It is very weird. Am I going crazy and doing something nobody has ever seen or it is a known bug?

Thanks.Well, I've been able to open it only two or three times out of many attempts. The browser is messed up. There are problems with many windows. I reinstalled the .NET Studio (repaired)--to no avail. I scanned my entire system for viruses. It is clean.

I created a text file in the file system, renamed it with the .js extension, added it to an SSIS project (where it appears in the Miscellaneous folder), and opened its editor window without any problems.

Yesterday I did not pay attention to the "move file **** into" tab and it never appeared in miscellaneous which made me wonder. Now it works perfectly fine. No weird behavior anymore for sure.

Actually you are wrong about jscript not bein an option, sorry about saying that. There are two options: "general" and "scripts" under "new file"; "general" then branches into "text, xml," etc... and "scripts" into Jscript, VBScripts and Windows Script host.

Still there is a problem with the arrangement. I just tried to create a jscript file as I did yesterday, save it as a jscript file and move it into the project. I observed that if I first saved it and then moved it then I could open it and see the content in the editor. If I MOVED it first and then saved it the things are messed up although not as badly as I saw yesterday.

In any event, you advanced my understanding of the GUI greatly and I am very appreciative of it.

Cannot make New role assignments

New role assignment does not work on my new installation of SQL Reporting Services Enterprise edition on a Windows 2003 server. From Report Manager I navigate to: Home->Properties and select 'New Role Assignment'. I fill in a local user and select the 'Browser' role and click 'OK'. Nothing happens - there is no post-back. I have the same problem for 'Site Settings'. It's as if the Report Manager is running in read-only mode. Do I need to change some configuration to facilitate changes?

I'm having the same problem on trying to create New Role on both spots as the previous poster. There is no script errors in lower left hand corner. The button "New Role" does not even post back to the browser as I always thought "submit" uses the method specified in form action? >|||I found the a partial work around to get access to exisitng parent roles.
When you create a report folder, and you click on the report folder, you will have a "security" link in left hand nav. This allowed me to assign to Browser role which I did not have access to under Parent site setting and properties. Also it will ask if youre sure you want to use specific security on that folder, you must say Yes. You can always revert back using the button provided.

In case this helps anyone...
The installation had a problem (25619) with virtual directories and I had to
create them manually (setup parameter -rsdonotcreatevirtualdirectories=true)
which I found in a kb article. I followed the steps to create the vir dir's
after the install and everything functioned except for the problem described
in this thread.
Perhaps the following kb article should be updated with a step to execute
aspnet_regiis -c from the .net framework dir.

Cannot install SSIS or Notification services

I'm trying to reinstall SQL Server 2005 STD but I cannot get Setup to install Integration Services or Notification Services. I looked in the log and this is what I found. Needless to say, it makes no sense to me. It seems that Setup is trying to find a missing source list for a certain product. I have no clue what that product is. During your first install, the MSIs were cached to the specified location (G:\servers\setup\...). Apparently those files were subsequently deleted or perhaps the drive is no longer accessible. Are you reinstalling from the original media or are you using add/remove programs?|||

The c:\windows\installer folder is ordinarily hidden. To see it, go to Windows Explorer tools\folder options and under the view tab turn on both "Display the contents of system folders" and "Show hidden files and folders". Once you've done that, the folder and its contents should be visible.

I've removed MS Office, VS2005 + documentation and everthing related to SQL. I then re-installed the 64 bit version of the .NET framework 2.0 and followed this up by SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services SP2. The same problems occur as reported below.

I've been at this for 5 days. Can anyone give me an idea of where to begin debugging this problem or should I simply give up and report it as a bug to Microsoft. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions.

2. For the SSEAS setup, I make no selections and simply keep the default feature selection (i.e. data base services). I've removed MS Office, VS2005 + documentation and everthing related to SQL. I then re-installed the 64 bit version of the .NET framework 2.0 and followed this up by SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services SP2. The same problems occur as reported below.

I've been at this for 5 days. Can anyone give me an idea of where to begin debugging this problem or should I simply give up and report it as a bug to Microsoft. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions.

1. I've now enabled all IIS features.

2. For the SSEAS setup, I make no selections and simply keep the default feature selection (i.e. data base services). At the `Existing components` window, the option `SQL Server Database services 9.2.30042.00` is disabled and clicking on `next` displays a message that "None of the selected features can be installed or upgraded. Setup cannot proceed...".

Any ideas as to what this causing the bug and how to get past it?

|||I reformatted the hard driver, reinstalled Vista Premium, SQL Server Express and all is well now.|||Make shure you didnt mask reportng services resources on instalation, because, IIS is a pre-requisit to install it.

cannot install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services SP2

I get the following error message each time I try to install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services SP2:

When I continue with:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934162,
the script 'adsutil.vbs' cannot be executed because it does not exist anywhere on my drive.

My question is, what is the 'adsutil.vbs' script and how do I get a hold of it? Are these contortions really necessary to get SQL server working or has MS provided a patch for this nasty problem?
