Cannot open connection Dialog when starting SQL Server Management Studio

I start SQL Server Management Studio on my workstation and get the following message.

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

Failed to open connection dialog.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

I had SQl Express version installed previously and everything worked. I could connect to one server running SQL Express and a different server running full up SQL 2005 enterprise version.

I uninstalled All SQL express programs and installed tools from SQL 2005 developer.

I have rebooted, started the program directly (not using a link of any kind) and all attempts fail. After dismissing the error msg the tool opens and I can run queries agains the DB but the database engines and related tables do not show.

My work station is Windows XP with SP2 installed.

I have googled the problem extensively and tried solutions found but none have solved the problem.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I uninstalled all SQL Server components, deleted all directories (there were no files) in the installation directory. Then reinstalled SQL Server 2005 developer edition. All management tools appear to work correctly.

You shouldn't be able to upgrade your report server. We don't support upgrade in the July CTP. Can you install a new instance?|||

No I am not trying to upgrade, but trying to install a clean install on windows 2003 box and I cannot.

Any thoughts, ideas.

|||What if you don't install the workstation tools? Just install the Report Server and see if you can configure it. Can you install the relational database by itself?|||

I am able to install the report server as well as the db from the looks of it.

But since management studio does not gets installed, I cannot verify or do anything with the DB.

I need to evaluate reporting services so it is very crucial to get this up and running.

Cannot Install Workstation Components - Missing Management Studio

Hello,

I have installed SQL Server 2K5 Developer Edition x64, when viewing the option under Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server 2005, I do not have the option for Management Studio.

When I attempt to install workstation components I get a message claiming the components I am attempting to install are already installed on the machine and the install will not let me continue.

Any help would be appreciated.

Further details, I installed SQL Server after .Net 2K5.

Once I removed all SQL Server components, then re-installed SQL Server 2K5 all appropriate tools were present.

While installing , to get tools, you need to select Workstation components from the same window where you sleect Services. If the services are already installed, then go to Control Pannel -- Add/Remove Prorgamm -- Sql server -- Change/Remove -- choose Change and select the Workstation components. It will install only Components. If you are not installed any services, then Install the services and worksation components ...

Thanks Madhu,

I resolved the issue prior to you posting by removing SQL Server and SQL Express (installed via .Net 2005 Install). Upon re-installing SQL Server 2005 Dev I was able to access SSMS. I will keep this in mind if I experience this behavior again

4.3.3 Installing SQL Server "Katmai" Removes Support for DTS in SQL Server 2005 Integration Services Packages

For this CTP release, you must uninstall SQL Server 2005 Workstation Components before installing the SQL Server "Katmai" Workstation Components. Uninstalling the SQL Server 2005 Workstation Components removes three Integration Services components: the SQL Server 2005 version of the Execute DTS 2000 Package task and two supporting assemblies. These three Integration Services components support backward compatibility between SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2000 Data Transformation Services (DTS). Without these three components, SQL Server 2005 packages and tools that require DTS support will not run.

However, SQL Server "Katmai" Integration Services includes a version of the Execute DTS 2000 task and the two supporting assemblies.
