Cannot register SQL server
It is the same old problem again but mine is a bit strange. I have read
other discussion on this problem but still cannot locate the cause.
I have a primary domain controller (PDC) running W2000 and SQL Server 2000
serving my main database. I have another W2k3 server running SQL Desktop
Engine which locates in the DMZ of my network and serves as my mini database
for displaying data for our web site. Of course the PDC is behind the
firewall. I need to create a package copying data from my main DB to my
mini DB regularly. When I create my package in Enterprise Manager on my
PDC, I cannot find my web server (i.e. the W2k3 server in DMZ). The error
is "Server does not exist or access denied". The strange thing is that I
can register the mini DB server from other PCs in the same network. Hence I
think it is not the problem of firewall. Also, the PDC can register other
SQL server as well but just not the one on my web server.
Can you suggest what I can check to solve the problem?
Thanks
Edwin
Verify that you can connect in both directions using ISQL.exe
ISQL -Stcp:ServerNameHere -E
or
ISQL -Stcp:ServerNameHere -Uuserid -Ppassword
If this fails it will give you a more accurate error message.

|||I am getting the failure to register SQL server in Enterprise Manager problem in a new named instance of SQL server on a new MOTION tablet which comes with dot net framework installed. The application requires the dot net framework and will run under MSDE or Personal SQL. I have successful connected to the sample .mdb that ships with the application after installing the application and MSDE on the local machine with no network connection. After logging off the local machine and on to the domain (behind my ZYWALL firewall, I am able to company my main .mdf to the local machine. Does the TRUSTED CONNECTION issue apply here since the main .mdf comes from another machine? Does sa for the MOTION tablet have to be the same as sa in the .mdf I hope to be able to attach. After repeated installs/uninstalls of MSDE, personal SQL and the applicaiton itself, I am now not able to even get one connected registration. What are the key issues in this situation? I have not examined the registry. Maybe that is the next step?
I hope this more elementary situation is not too far afield from the original question.
THANKS

Cannot install 'SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services'
I tried to install 'SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services'. First, I uninstalled the old version thru Add/Delete Programs in the Control Panel.
My first problem was I didn't have IIS installed on my computer, but, I could not find it in the downloads section.
Then the installation aborted because old version databases were in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data. But, it would not let me delete them, saying that they were being used, even though nothing was running at the time that I tried to delete them.
Hi,
"But, it would not let me delete them, saying that they were being used, even though nothing was running at the time that I tried to delete them."
I guess you still have a SQL Server installed on the system. If you want to install this, there has to be another option in the Add/Remove software panel for this instance. look in the service, if another service is running with SQL Server in its name (depending on the version you are using) you still have one installed.
"My first problem was I didn't have IIS installed on my computer, but, I could not find it in the downloads section."
IIS is part of the Windows installation, it can be installed by choosing the Add/remove Software icon in the control panel, choosing then the "Add/remove Windows Components" and then then "Internet Information Services (IIS).

I went into:
Control Panel
Add / Remove Programs
Add / Remove Windows Components
IIS was not one of the options there!

it, wouldn′t comply with the license agreement within

|||I upgraded to Windows XP Professional. I installed IIS.
When I attempt to run my app, I get an error message. I have had this problem occasionally before, the problem is that the SQL Server is not running. I went into Start/Run/c:\sseutil.exe -l. It said "The service MSSQL$SQLExpress" is not started. Would you like to start the service?" I replied "y". It said "Starting service....", but, it just hung there, it never actually succeeded in starting the service.
Before upgrading to XP Pro, my app ran, but, I would frequently have to go into sseutil.exe to start up SQL Server. After upgrading to XP Pro, I cannot get SQL Server to start.
I went into Control Panel/Add remove Programs and tried to uninstall Microsoft SQL Native Client. It said "This installation package cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service. You must install a Windows Service Pack that contains a newer version of the Windows Installer Service."
|||Hi,if an error occured during the startup process of the SQL Server Service, it is logged in the event log, try to see what happened here and post back the event log entries if you are not familiar with debugging these.

|||I un-installed and re-installed SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services. The install appeared to work correctly. My app no longer will run! sseutil.exe says "'MSSQL$SQLExpress' is not started. Would you like to start the service?", when I reply "y", it just hangs and never starts the service!|||Hi,
like I already said, look in the event log which will give you a more detailed information than the service starting message box. There has to be a problem during the start. The problem can vary so for trouleshooting the exact error message will be needed.

cannot install express edition
but I am getting an error "sql server 2005 CTP setup has detected incompatible beta components from visual studio or sql server.........." when try to install sql server.
I don't have any visual studio or any old version of .net framework or sql.
I have exactly the same problem. I have successfully un-installed previous VS beta 1 and langs, then went to install VS Beta2. Point I would like to raise , if build uninstall tool can find these traces why can't it point them out (&location) in plainer language, then I could DO something about!!
Hair loss increasing, do I give up?|||finally I was able to install by deleting some registry enteries that get left behind from previous uninstalls.|||
How did you managed to get it installed. What registry entries been deleted? I have same problem. Your help is appraciated.

|||i would like to know this two, i can not install June Edition too.thank u for ur advice!|||I have exactly the same problem, too.
Which are the entries in the registery to remove?
Thank you very much for any help.
Regards,
Fabian|||If I remeber correctly, SQL-Express leaves installation protocolls, telling you quite excatly with which components it got problems. Those logs can give you hints what registry entries you have to delete.
Unfortunately, I got it running quite a time ago, so I can't remeber excatly how I did it.
Maybe the log files where located at:
C:\Programme\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG
Take your chance!
Hope this help,
Klaus
