Cannot Remotely Access SQL Server Standard Named Instance

Good Day,

I am creating a SQL Named instance as a testing environment. This instance is on the same physical box as my Development environment, both are SQL 2005 standard edition. From the server in Management Studio, I can load, and interact with both instances. From a remote connection (e.g., my pc) I cannot access the named instance. I am getting the following:

Connect to Server

X Cannot connect to <server>\<named instance>

Additional Information

An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Sever 2006, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)(Microsoft SQL Server)

I have checked, and rechecked the server settings for this named instance, and remote connections are set to "allow" I have enabled TCPIP and Named Pipes prototocals, and have ensured that my firewall is allowing the "listenting port" for the named instance, and have even tried turning off my XP firewall during testing.

I am sure that I have probably missed something, and have searched the community but only have been able to find resolutions that I have already tried. Is there more?

Thanks in advance for any help and guidance you can provide.

Cannot perform requested task because full-text manager is not

I am trying to import/transfer data tables from an existing MS SQL
2005 Express Adv install to an MS SQL 2000 Standard install (on
different boxes) but it is not working. It's seems to be failing with
the above mentioned error. Can anyone help with this?
Thanks,
J.Well, do you have full text indexes on Express Adv.? Did you install/enable
full-text on Standard? You are probably trying to move tables with
full-text indexes onto Standard, but it can't set them up because full text
is not there or not enabled...

Could you tell me how would I go about checking to see if it is
installed on both servers? Is there an SQL query that I can
perform...?

I would check the services applet in the control panel.|||Yup looked there but it didn't say much, so I tried a reinstall and
the option was there but unselected. Once the install went through,
all was well. I am copying the data now. Thanks!!!

If you do not need the full text indexes, I suppose that you could go
through your databases (there are only a few, right) and try to drop all
full-text indexes.
Look under:
DatabaseName
Storage
Full Text Catalogs
From the catalogs you can determine which tables have full text indexes. If
you script a drop of the catalog it will script out a drop the indexes then
drop the catalogs. I have not tested this, but it is a free idea. If it
seems suitable, try it out and see if solves your problem.

Cannot open http://localhost/reports

Hi Folks,

I've just installed SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition with Reporting Services.

Via Visual Studio, I am able to create and run reports without an issue, but I am unable to launch the web element of Reporting Services, via http://localhost/reports

I get the message "Page cannot be found".

I have run the install a second time in the hope of a "repair" but it has made no difference.

FYI, from within IIS, I cannot see reference to a website for "reports".

Any ideas?

If there is not reference for Report or ReportServer, then you probably did not install the Reporting Server. make sure that the prerequisites are fullfilled before installing the server.

HTH, Jens Suessmeyer.

http://www.sqlserver2005.de|||You may have unchecked the option to configure the server during the install. Try launching the RS 2005 Configuration tool from Start->All Programs->Microsoft SQL Server 2005->Configuration Tools->Reporting Services Configuration. This should allow you to check of everything is set up correctly.

Cannot open database during merge replication

Hi All,
I am replicating an SQL2005 express machine to SQL2005 standard edition server using merge replication.

I have a simple VB application using ADO polling msMerge_history at the subscriber every second so that i can show the end user the progress of the replication.

When the subscription first subscribes and after the initial snapshot is applied replication downloads all changes from the server that have been changed since the snapshot was created.

Towards the end of this download faze the VB polling application fails with "Cannot open database "DBName" requested by the login. The login failed."

This connection fails 4 or 5 times and then normal polling resumes. The scary thing is that sometimes when the polling connection fails the merge replication does not complete and if i check msMerge_Sessions the "runstatus" is stuck at 3 (InProgress).

1) Is the reason the ADO polling connection fails because of some sort of lock between replication and reading the system tables?
2) Is replication getting stuck because of locks?
3) What can i do to get around this?

cheers,
Tim

Hello Tim,

Please try to use uncommited read isolation level (or SELECT ... WITH (NOLOCK) )when querying msMerge_Sessions table.

But result row set from this query contains uncommitted transactions.

Cannot Open Database "XXXX" requested by login. The login failed. Login failed for user xx

hi,

so i have a new box and I'm trying to get my websites and SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition working on it, but the pages give me the following error when I try to load them:

"Cannot Open Database "XXXX" requested by login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'xxx'"

Everything seems exactly the same settings and user-wise from my old box to my new one, but nevertheless everything I've tried gives me the same error.

I've tried creating new users in SQL Server and giving them appropriate permissions to my database. I've even tried just using the built in 'sa' account. Nothing seems to change the error, except when I give it the incorrect password then it just says 'login failed'

This leads me to believe that i'm successfully logging into the SQL Server, but it doesn't want to give me access to the database I'm requesting access too. But "apparently" the account i'm using should have access to the database. If nothing else the 'sa' account should, but that didn't work either.

I'm stumped. Any ideas?

Check the database settings for user you are trying to login with and make sure they have permission and deny data reader is not checked.|||yep, the user currently has SELECT, UPDATE, INSERT, DELETE, and CONNECT permission selected.|||Look in the database properties under users and make sure the user has permissions there|||yep, the user is even marked as the dbowner.|||

here is my connection string just in case it's something funny there, but this connection string works on my old box with apparently the exact same settings

<

addname="ConnectionString"connectionString="Server=ServerName;Database=MyDatabase;User ID=MyID;Password=MyPassword;Trusted_Connection=False"providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />|||

ha!

the problem was that when I restored my database (from the old box to the new box), SQL Server replaced a certain character in the name with a different character. Namely replaced "\" with "_".

So it wasn't finding the database... I didn't need those five hours of my life anyways ;-)

Cannot make server as Target server or link from Master Server

Sql Server 7 Standard Edition
My Server was renamed and the normal steps of reinstalling
and running sp_dropserver and sp_addserver were followed.
Everything seems to work fine but jobs from the master server.
I did defect the server as a target server since it appeared as offline
anyway.

On trying to re establish the status of the server as a target server

Failed to make "serverName" a target server
Enlist into Master Server "MasterServerName" Failed(Error 14262)

Your insight is appreciated

Is @.@.SERVERNAME returning the correct (new) name? Error 14262 should be "The
specified %s ('%s') does not exist" - what is the full error message you
see? Are there any name resolution issues, ie. can both servers see each
other (ping.exe or NET VIEW) on the network?

Thanks for your response.
@.@.servername returns the right value.
I did forget to mention that the master server is sql server 2000 and
target server, sql server 7.
When the master server is pinged from the client it returns packets
with no error.

When originating_server is selected from sysjobs it returns 'local'

I did notice that the target server name has been added as an alias
when you open
the client network utilities. Not sure if that will make any difference

This is the exact error message

Failed to make "serverName" a target server
Enlist into Master Server "MasterServerName" Failed(Error 14262)

It sounds as if everything is OK - the only thing I can think of is that the
alias in the client network utilities might still have the old server name?
Also, can you create a working linked server from the SQL2000 server to the
SQL7 one? If not, then there is probably sort of name resolution issue. But
if you can, then I have no idea what the issue is - probably time to call
Microsoft.

Cannot install SQL Server 2005 Standard WinXP Pro SP2

Hello,

I have SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition already installed. Before starting
the SQL Server 2005 Standard setup, I exited the SQL server agent running in
my system tray.

I am logged on as Administrator and no other desktop apps are running. SQL
Server 2005 Setup reports several "Setup failed." error messages after the
install. I am choosing (for now) ONLY the workstation tools and books online
check mark. The installation presents a screen that says that these products
were successfully installed ("Setup finished"):
- MSXML6
- OWC11
- SQL Server Backward-Compatibility Files
However, these items have a red x next to them:
- SQL Server Books Online
- SQL Server Support Files
- SQLXML4
- SQL Native Client
- Workstation Components, Books Online, ...

My Setup log file terminates with a few messages--one of which contains the
words "Configuration failed." (This is the ONLY mention of the word "fail" in
the Setup log--see the excerpt below.)

Any ideas? I'm stuck without SQL Server 2005 running so this is a
productivity killer for me.

More info: Here is what I have done, to no avail:

1) Installed the OWC11 components using a direct download from Microsoft.
That install worked. But when it runs again from the SQL Server 2005 DVD, it
fails.
2) Logged on not as a user with Admin rights, but as ADMINISTRATOR. Same
results--the SQL Server 2005 Standard setup failed.
3) Installed SQL Server 2005 Express successfully. Afterwards, tried again
to install SQL Server 2005 Standard, and that setup failed.
4) Cleared registry values for SQL Server 2005 under HKLM.../Software as
described in KB article. Also deleted the installation folder ...90. Tried
again to install SQL Server 2005 Standard, and that setup failed.
5) Tried the 180-day trial of SQL Server 2005 Enterprise--to no avail. Same
results.

Found error logs but they did not help me pinpoint the root cause for the
failed installation.

Thank you,
-- Jonathan

As a first check have you disabled Anti-virus and Anti-firewall before installing?|||

Yes, anti-virus software is OFF and my XP Firewall is OFF.

I re-ran SQL Server 2005 Standard Setup, and here is some more information.

Setup Support files install properly.
Installation Wizard begins.
Status of ALL requirements is "Success".
Windows Installer launches.
I click Next on Serial Number screen after completing the form.
In Components to Install, I select only "Workstation components, Books Online and development tools"
A screen acknowledges that only Client Components will be installed.
I click Install.
A status dialog appears. Setup clearly begins to install files. Then it shows, one-by-one:

1. SQL Setup Support Files FAILED.
2. SQL Native Client FAILED.
3. OWC11 Setup finished.
4. Then I see "Removing backup files"
5. Then Sql Server Books Online failed, along with other failed statuses.

Any ideas?

OK--If anyone cannot help on Microsoft TechNet, can anyone point me in the right direction on how to solve this issue?

1) Are there other web sites that might offer help?

2) Will Microsoft charge an incident fee for this issue since it appears to be a problem with Setup?

3) Does anyone have any suggestions?

This machine has Visual Studio 2003, Visual Studio 6, Macromedia 8, Adobe Photoshop CS2, IE7, and several other high-end products, such as InstallShield 12 Premium. All of those installed and are running without incident.

I can't imagine why SQL Server 2005 setup can't detect what's wrong and provide a successful installation.

Thank you.

|||Install sqlncli.msi before installing mssql2005.|||

Hello:

I ran the sqlncli.msi and received an error that I had a higher version already installed on my machine. I then used Add/Remove programs to remove the SQL Native Client--and then I re-ran sqlncli.msi successfully.

I then re-ran SQL Server 2005 Standard setup and received all the same installation errors already reported.

What now?

|||

I'm contacting Microsoft Support. I thank you for those who tried to help but it is a bit ridiculous to have a support group that can't even troubleshoot getting the product installed!

I will report the root cause here (if Microsoft is able to figure it out).

Thank you.

|||Install sqlncli.msi before installing mssql2005.|||

What now?

|||

I'm contacting Microsoft Support. I thank you for those who tried to help but it is a bit ridiculous to have a support group that can't even troubleshoot getting the product installed!

I will report the root cause here (if Microsoft is able to figure it out).

Thank you,

Jon500

Cannot Install SQL Server 2005 after running Uninstall

After going through "Add and Remove Programs" and removing all components of SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition on my desktop I get an error telling me there is a copy already installed and to remove it before continuing. Well nothing shows up under "Add and Remove Programs"; Windows cleanup shows none of the SQL Server components; a check of the register (HOTKEYS.../unistall) have no SQL Server entries; under services all SQL Server services are disabled and not running.

I have followed all the steps in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909967 (Describes how to uninstall an instance of SQL Server 2005 manually).

Anyone out there got a solution? (Visual Studio 2005 eval is loaded on the box)

Hi,

You this utility to uninstall clearly. Microsoft cleanup Utility. Download this, install and clean up SQL.|||

I had already ran this prgram plus many others. I am now able to install after I removed the Microsoft Sql Server directory under "Programs".

|||

Or you can try to manually uninstall SQL Server 2005 later. Detail steps please refer to "How to uninstall an instance of SQL Server 2005 manually http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909967".

Cannot generate SSPI context

We get the "Cannot generate SSPI context" error when trying to use Windows
Authentication. We are using SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition (SP3), and
Windows 2000 5.00.2195 (SP 4). We are using TCP/IP.
Could you please shed some light on why we have to use SQL Server
Authentication?
Thank you.

Cannot generate SSI Context

New install of SQL Server 2005 (x64) Standard after uninstalling previous version SQL Server (x86) Standard.

After installation, client connections are receiving "Cannot generate SSI Context" error messages. TCP/IP Integrated Authentication is being used.

Kerboros authentication is failing when SQLService is running under a domain account and works when running under local system account by reverting back to NTLM authentication.

How do I get the Server to revert to NTLM authentication when running under a domain account so that the error will go away?

Mike

First, here are great blogs for troubleshooting this problem:

http://blogs.msdn.com/sql_protocols/archive/2005/10/15/481297.aspx

http://blogs.msdn.com/sql_protocols/archive/2005/10/19/482782.aspx

Secondly:

Are you making local connection or remote connection?

If local, do not use protocol prefix like "tcp:" in your connection string. BTW, by OS default, local authentication always use NTLM except on XP.

If remote, use "np:" explicitly in your connection string which requires rmote named pipe enabled.

Finally:

Use tool Setspn.exe -D <spn> "computername" to delete SPN you registered, without spn, kerbroes would not take effect.

I have read these two blogs. My question is how do I get the client to automatically revert to NTLM when using a domain account for the service without receiving the error.

I am making remote connections from SQL Server Studio with both XP and Server 2003 (both display the same behavior), and Remote Connections are enabled on the Server. There is not an actual connection string with a specific protocol prefix, it always uses the default I assume.

We are required to always use TCP/IP and integrated authentication here.

It appears that there is an orphan spn that is causing my problem. If I delete it, this should cause the system to revert to use NTLM and I should be able to change the service to run under an account that is not a Domain administrator, correct?

Thanks for your assistance.

Mike

|||

If a SPN is registered for the SQL Server service, client will find the SPN and Kerboros will be used. If SPN is not registered, client will automatically revert to NTLM. SPN registration/deregistration is done automatically by the SQL Server, a client cannot choose to use or not use it.

Are you sure NTLM is used when you run the server under local system account? please use the following command to confirm it: "select auth_scheme from sys.dm_exec_connections where session_id=@.@.spid "

Several questions:

1) did you gracefully shut down SQL Server (x86) before you uninstall it?

2) Can you stop you sql server and run "setspn -L yourmachinename"? Do you see "MSSQLSvc/....."? how about you run the command when sql server is running under local system and/or a domain account?

Most likely, you did not cleanly uninstall the old sql server and a SPN is left over. Please try to delete it as suggested by Ming LV.

Thanks,

|||

The Active Directory admin has deleted the SPN for this server.

I am still unable to connect to the Server from the SQL 2005 client. The samne error message appears. Next we will wipe out the machine and try a clean install I guess.

|||

1) On your server box, use "Setspn -L <machinename> " check whether SPN like" MSSQLSvc/<your machine FQDN>:1433" goes away.

2) Shutdown your sql server, change the service account to a non-admin account, restart your sql server.

3) Make remote tcp connection.

BTW, sql server does not force kerberoes, it is OS behavior, if OS can not find a SPN in KDC for the server, it would automatically fall back to NTLM.

Thanks!

Ming.

Assuming that (1) your SPN is removed and (2) you are doing remote connection, (3) you were testing connection without rebooting the client machine after removing the SPN in domain controler/AD,

One possibility is that the cached kerberos "tickets" haven't expired yet in your client machine. You can either reboot your client machine or use "klist.exe -purge" to clean the kerberos cache. "klist.exe" comes with w2k3 resource kits.

Running under domain account is recommened. Reinstalling the sql server might help in other cases but certainly not in this situation.

|||

My System Administrator assured me that he deleted the SPN.

This server does not have a copy of setspn on it. Do you know where I can find this utility?

I rebooted the client but am still receiving the saame message.

Funny thing is the machine right next to this one is running SQL Server 2005 withouyt any problem running under the same domain account with identical permissions.

Reinstalling the operating system Windows Server 2003 X64 Standard and reinstalling SQL Server X64 Standard will not help either?

Here is the actual error I am receiving:

You can get setspn tool from w2k3 resource kit.

Can you test the following.

(1) change your sql serverb service to localsystem account.

(2) restart the service.

(3) test the connection and let me what you get.

(4) shutdown the service cleanly.

(5) restart the server under the domain account you are using now.

(6) test the conenction and let me know what you get.

Can you also post the errorlog info w.r.t to SPN?

|||

When I change the service to use Local System, it works.

When I change it back to use the domain account, it does not work.

Here is the error message that shows up in the error log when I chaged the account the service runs under:

The SQL Network Interface library could not register the Service Principal Name (SPN) for the SQL Server service. Error: 0x2098. Failure to register an SPN may cause integrated authentication to fall back to NTLM instead of Kerberos. This is an informational message. Further action is only required if Kerberos authentication is required by authentication policies.

Version: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (X64)

Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation

Standard Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 1)

Authentication mode is MIXED.

On uninstall:

The SQL Network Interface library could not deregister the Service Principal Name (SPN) for the SQL Server service. Error: 0x2098. Administrator should deregister this SPN manually to avoid client authentication errors.

|||

"The SQL Network Interface library could not deregister the Service Principal Name (SPN) for the SQL Server service. Error: 0x2098. Administrator should deregister this SPN manually to avoid client authentication errors."

Do you also see this message showing up in the shutdown of the sql service under "localsystem" or "domain account"? You shouldn't normally.

So, I need to you have setspn.exe to to verity if you have a orphan spn registried. Klist.exe to verify what you have in your client ticket cache, You can get them from resource kit of sql server 2003.

|||

I downloaded setspn and ran it with the -l flag. The Server name is registered as expected but there are no other listings for the SQLServerSrvc. So an invalid SPN apparently does not exist currently.

|||can you try klist.exe purge and type yes for all. Try to connect. Let me know what you get?|||

The SPN error does not show up when I change form the Local System account.

KList shows this ticket from my client workstation:

Server: MSSQLSvc/cartlabsvr2.ad.garmin.com:1433@.AD.GARMIN.COM
KerbTicket Encryption Type: RSADSI RC4-HMAC(NT)
End Time: 5/1/2006 23:30:17
Renew Time: 5/8/2006 13:30:17

Is this what is causing the problem? How do I get rid if this?

II also asked a co-worker to try to connect that has not connected to this SQL Server previously, and he received the same SSIS Context error....

|||

"klist.exe purge" should clean up your local cache.

As you can see,

KerbTicket Encryption Type: RSADSI RC4-HMAC(NT)
End Time: 5/1/2006 23:30:17 <<< the cache is created just now.
Renew Time: 5/8/2006 13:30:17 <<<< the cache will only expire after a week. The AD policy does not expect you to change account very often.

Let me what you get after you purge off all the ticket. If it failed again, I hope not, let me know what shows up in setspn.exe and klist.exe.
