Cannot Install Workstation Components - Missing Management Studio

Hello,

I have installed SQL Server 2K5 Developer Edition x64, when viewing the option under Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server 2005, I do not have the option for Management Studio.

When I attempt to install workstation components I get a message claiming the components I am attempting to install are already installed on the machine and the install will not let me continue.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

CC

-

Further details, I installed SQL Server after .Net 2K5.

Once I removed all SQL Server components, then re-installed SQL Server 2K5 all appropriate tools were present.

While installing , to get tools, you need to select Workstation components from the same window where you sleect Services. If the services are already installed, then go to Control Pannel -- Add/Remove Prorgamm -- Sql server -- Change/Remove -- choose Change and select the Workstation components. It will install only Components. If you are not installed any services, then Install the services and worksation components ...

Thanks Madhu,

I resolved the issue prior to you posting by removing SQL Server and SQL Express (installed via .Net 2005 Install). Upon re-installing SQL Server 2005 Dev I was able to access SSMS. I will keep this in mind if I experience this behavior again Smile

Thanks again,

Cannot Install SQLServer 2005 Express

When I try to run the install it detects some previous versions components. The remove all previous beta components fails and I have removed everything from the Add/Remove Programs.
Any advice would be helpful
Irina

Hi Irina,

Take a look at your setup logs to find out exactly what pre-release component is being detected. Once you know which component it is, it should be easier to remove.

cannot install SQL Server Express, keep getting errors

I am trying to install SQL Server 2005 Express, but it fails.
SQL Server Setup has detected incompatible components from Beta version of Visual Studio, .NETFramework or SQL Server 2005. Use Add or Remove to

I had earlier installed Beta 2 Version of Dev Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Beta 2. I also had DevStudio 2003 and SQL Server installed. I have gone through and un-installed everything, but I keep getting this error.

I have also tried
msiexec /x {2AFFFDD7-ED85-4A90-8C52-5DA9EBDC9B8F}
msiexec /x {2750B389-A2D2-4953-99CA-27C1F2A8E6FD}
Both of these un-install start, but fail with error messages.

Would appreciate if anyone can help.

Try the following.
1. Uninstall all visible Beta components in Add/Remove Programes.

2. Detect the Beta components infromation in the the log file located in %Program Files%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Files\SQLSetupNo_%machinename%_Core(Local).log.

3. Search the whole registry keys, remove those registy keys related to those Beta components. This is time-consuming.

4. Kill all Beta SQL Services (including SQL, OLAP, RS, SQLBROWSER, SQLAGENT, etc.) if they are existing with command sc.

5. Reboot the machine.

6. Start Setup again.

|||I looked at the log and tried to uninstall old version, but it does not exists.
However, in the logs, I saw a version number and seach registry. They are many entries of SQL Server Express. I deleted some of them, but no luck yet. I am quite sure if I get rid of all the old registry setting, it should fix the problem.
Thanks for your help,

Saleem|||Problem fixed. I can now install SQL Server Express. Thanks for you help.
This is what I did.
Looked in file \Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG.
It had referecne to other log files. I opened one of the files, HostName_core.log
(notepad C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Files\SQLSetup0012_<My_HostName>_Core.log)

This file had multiple reference to older versions of SQL Server Express. Example
Product "{2AFFFDD7-ED85-4A90-8C52-5DA9EBDC9B8F}" versioned 9.00.1116 is not compatible with current builds of SQL Server.Expected at least version: 9.00.1399.06
The Product Name is "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition CTP"

First I tried to uninstall, (MsiExec.exe /x {2AFFFDD7-ED85-4A90-8C52-5DA9EBDC9B8F}). Un-install failed.

Then I searched for 9.00.1399.06. I found multiple entried. I deleted them all.
After that I was able install SQL Server Express.|||

I tried 3 other fixes on other forums (asp.net,etc.) and this is the only one that worked.

My log file had a similar message. However, I deleted the entries related to the older version (in the case above, that would be 9.00.1116); not the later or "expected at least" version (9.00.1399.06).

With this fix, I did not have to remove .net 1.0 beta or .net 1.1

|||Thanks for posting - that worked for me too - I had just spent my own money buying VS2005 Pro and couldn't install SQL Express because previously installed beta stuff was fouling up the install.

Perhaps the SQL guys at MS could revise the install script in future releases to 'clean up' before installing... Just a suggestion.

Anyway, just re-installed trhe whole .Net DVD and it's running now, so thanks!

Cannot install SQL Server 2005 Express

Whole installation works fine until it comes to "Selected components are being configured" and there it shows:

MSXML6 - Setup FAILED. refer to the Setup log for details.

SQL Setup support files - Setup FINISHED.

SQL Native Client - Setup FINISHED.

SQL VSS Writter - - Setup FINISHED.

SQL Server Database Services - Setup FAILED. refer to the Setup log for details

And that's it. I cannot install SQL Server 2005 express.

I guess the problem is MSXML6 it cannot install because there is a newer version already there but I cannot uninstall it. How can I solve this problem ?

Thanks.

Try installing the Express Advanced it has most features except the Agent. Hope this helps.

No still cannot install - again problem with MSXML6 - cannot install it.

cannot install sql server 2005 developer over sql server 2000 desktop edition

It will not install the database components it refuses to install over the older desktop edition... what are we supposed to do.. we have many registered servers to all the customers and servers we use so we don't want to remove the older one... but we are developers and develop applications that our customers use and need the new version on these machines....

thanks

Larry,

Can you provide more details on what you mean by "it will not install..."

Cheers,
Dan

|||I assumed you knew it will install everything but the database component complaining about something to the regards of not be able to install developer over version 8.0.0.x.x or something due to licensing..|||I
f this is not enought I will run it again and give you the exact wording.. but it just disables installation of the database component and lets you go ahead with the rest. what is the point of installing the other stuff without the database component?|||

So you're trying to upgrade MSDE to what SQL Server 2005 Edition?

The supported upgrade paths for MSDE are:

SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE) 7.0 SP4

SQL Server 2005 Express Edition

SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE) 20001

SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition

SQL Server 2005 Express Edition

For the full matrix of supported upgrade paths look at: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393(en-US,SQL.90).aspx

Cheers,
Dan

|||

I don't think this covers it.. desktop edition is not the same as desktop engine... desktop edition is a special version on enterprise edition or standard cd's that can install on windows 2000 profesional instead of server...

I did what you say and express installed.. but it does not have the management studio which we need to connect to our various development servers.. for our workstations..

any ideas.. thanks

|||

what a pain I had to remove everything.. express edition and sql server 2000 and then install...

there should be an upgrade path from desktop edition to developr...

anyway in the future when I do this I can backup databases... as I did but the big thing we loose is we have about 50 remote database connections in enterprise manager..

is there a way to save these and then reimport them once 2005 is intalled...

thanks..

Cannot Install SQL Server 2005 after running Uninstall

After going through "Add and Remove Programs" and removing all components of SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition on my desktop I get an error telling me there is a copy already installed and to remove it before continuing. Well nothing shows up under "Add and Remove Programs"; Windows cleanup shows none of the SQL Server components; a check of the register (HOTKEYS.../unistall) have no SQL Server entries; under services all SQL Server services are disabled and not running.

I have followed all the steps in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909967 (Describes how to uninstall an instance of SQL Server 2005 manually).

Anyone out there got a solution? (Visual Studio 2005 eval is loaded on the box)

Hi,

I had already ran this prgram plus many others. I am now able to install after I removed the Microsoft Sql Server directory under "Programs".

Cannot install server components

I have the beta version of RS running fine on Windows 2000 Server (SP4), IIS 5, and SQL Server 2000 Enterprise (SP3a). No issues at all.
However, when trying to install the RS release candidate, for some reason I am not presented with the server components option - I can only see the client tools option.
Can anyone assist?Did you receive any prereq warnings?

Microsoft might want to add this "known issue" to the install notes.

Cannot Install Reporting Services Components!

I have set up a Virtual Machine that runs Windows Server 2003 x64.
When I come to install SQL Server Express edition the Reporting
Services components don't even show up as options for installation.
Oh, I'm installing Express edition with advanced services by the way
and I have the 3.0 .NET services already in place. I don't have IIS
installed though, and I don't know if that is related (it's the only
warning I get during install). I can only see Client and Database
components in the install. I'm trying to create a virtualized
environment where I can do some testing and run the Adventure Works
DBs... that way I have a place to train using the Microsoft training
modules. Tht way, it will not affect any of the real databases we use.IIS has to be there. Reporting Services is an asp.net application. RS 2005
is a 2.0 framework application (so 3.0 framework is of no use to it).

Ok, so I'll install IIS before running SQL Server installation.
Correction, I installed 2.0 .NET framework then I installed the SDK
(300mb) version on after that. Is that going to be ok? 3.0 is the
Vista one, my mistake. Is the initial reason why RS does not show up
in the installation because IIS is not there? It's just invisible.|||The issue with the 2.0 framework is whether the website is setup to be
running the framework. IIS has to be there for RS to install.

Ok I got it working. I had to setup up IIS and then make it so that
it will work in 32-bit mode. Afterwards it started working. I'm
thinking I could have just put the 180 day demo version on instead of
the express edition since it has more functionality. Oh well.

4.3.3 Installing SQL Server "Katmai" Removes Support for DTS in SQL Server 2005 Integration Services Packages

For this CTP release, you must uninstall SQL Server 2005 Workstation Components before installing the SQL Server "Katmai" Workstation Components. Uninstalling the SQL Server 2005 Workstation Components removes three Integration Services components: the SQL Server 2005 version of the Execute DTS 2000 Package task and two supporting assemblies. These three Integration Services components support backward compatibility between SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2000 Data Transformation Services (DTS). Without these three components, SQL Server 2005 packages and tools that require DTS support will not run.

However, SQL Server "Katmai" Integration Services includes a version of the Execute DTS 2000 task and the two supporting assemblies. Therefore, you can upgrade SQL Server 2005 packages that require DTS support to the SQL Server "Katmai" format by opening them in the SQL Server "Katmai" version of Business Intelligence Development Studio, and then running those packages as SQL Server "Katmai" packages.
